NOTES ON NEWS

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
To air current events, news stories and invesitgations instantaneously through radio, T.V. and internet.



List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

1. Unusualness:
News is the different, the unusual, the out of the ordinary.
why is the news always bad? Unusual is more often found in bad news.

2. Significant:
Important events that affect many people
-taxes
-elections
-wars
-scientific discoveries
-economy
3. Timeliness:
Old news isn't news, its history
-People want to hear about the flood while its happening, not next month

4.Proximity:
People want to know about nearby events
-local school gang
-new state tax laws
-local apartment fire
5. Prominence:
When well known people, buildings or places are involved, thats news
-If you are arrested for shoplifting, not news
-If Zac efron is arrested, thats news

6. Human Interest:
Stories about ordinary people or animals that are humorous or dramatic
-heartwarming or heart-wrenching stories
-These often appear in news because they have human interest
